Turner Valley is a small rural town approximately 50 kilometres south of Calgary with a population of about 1,700 people. It is located on Highway 22 (also known as the Cowboy Trail) and has an active tourist trade from those traveling along the Cowboy Trail and those visting the various artisans and tourist shops in town.
Turner Valley is credited for being where oil was first discovered in the Calgary area back in 1914 and over the next 30 years it became the largest producer of oil and gas in the entire British Empire, at times producing 200 million cubic feet of gas a day (enough to supply the needs of New York city) and 10 millions barrels of oil which helped the war efforts during World War II. Today the town is small and sleepy (like many other rural towns) as the oil and gas production in the area has since gone.
Being close enough to Calgary to commute, yet far enough away and relatively cheap to buy, has made Turner Valley a popular destination for people wishing to buy affordable housing. The town has an Elementary/Junior High School catering for kindergarten to grade 8 (students from grade 9 to grade 12 then attend Senior High School at the Oilfields High School in Black Diamond approximately 3 kilometres away). There are several churches in the area, a golf course, outdoor swimming pool, outdoor skate rink, skate board park and several other parks/green spaces. During May to August there is a country market that is held and from May to September and tourists can have a tour of the old gas plant.
Turner Valley is only a few kilometres west of another small town called Black Diamond and between the two towns is a pleasant country walk that follows Highway 22 and the Sheep River.
